Given the range of carpet and flooring options these days, finding the right one for your house or work space can be overwhelming. What’s more, in recent times, there’s been an increase in the number of people wanting to connect with nature in our indoor spaces, with a yearning to foster a sense of serenity and calmness within our work or lifestyle spaces.
In this month’s blog, we’re going to take a look at infiltrating Biophilic design into our indoor environments. If you haven’t heard of it before, Biophilic design is the practice of connecting people and the natural world within our built environments and communities, turning to nature and more environmentally sound products for solutions. Given the extensive range of such flooring products at Carpets on the Move, we’re excited to share our insights.
Eco-friendly flooring
Not only do eco-flooring options offer durability and longevity, but they also manage the practical demands of modern living, are cost-effective and environmentally friendly, minimising waste and reducing the need for constant replacement.
As well as wool, a completely natural carpet solution, another notable example of an eco-friendly example is Triexta carpet, which is both stain resistant and durable, making it great for family homes and high traffic areas. Triexta also has a similar composition to polyester carpets and is partly derived from corn sugar, making it an environmentally friendly choice for the home.
Flooring that prioritises durability ensures longevity and also minimises the need for frequent replacements, reducing environmental impact. A hallmark of this trend is the use of organic and earthy materials. Wood, stone and bamboo are being used for their aesthetic appeal, as well as their ability to create a tangible link to nature. In addition, these materials infuse spaces with warmth, texture and a sense of timelessness.
Earthy and warm colours
Recently, there has been resurgence in the demand for soft, earthy tones, such as oak or cream, over the once popular grey. People seem to be craving a cosier and more inviting living space that connects with nature. Warm oak tones are also incredibly versatile and suit a range of design styles, pairing with both traditional or contemporary aesthetics.
Outdoor inspiration also appears to be influencing colour palette trends, with tones such as forest greens, soothing blues and browns, at the forefront. Not only do these colours create a calming environment, but they also represent nature and in a way, bring the outdoors, inside.
Natural textures and patterns
Textures, such as plush velvets and rough-hewn woods, help add depth and intrigue to living spaces, creating a multi-sensory experience underfoot that makes interiors more inviting and engaging.
More recently, the textured patterns of many carpet tiles and vinyl planks take design inspiration from nature, delivering a realistic sense of the natural environment within interior spaces. For instance, commercial-grade vinyl planks emulate the timeless and raw look and feel associated with timber and stone flooring.
Indoor plants and lighting
Indoor plants and natural lighting also bring nature inside, literally! The more natural light you can incorporate into your living space the better and when complemented with greenery, such as indoor plants, the end result is truly stunning. Who doesn’t want plants creating more oxygen in the house and fortunately for us brown thumbs, indoor plants require little watering. Gone are the days of bright fluorescent lighting, softer, or even better, natural light, are preferable, particularly when trying to create an ambience of calm and serenity. Think lamps, lower wattage light bulbs, or if you can, skylights, to create a cosier interior space.
