Interested in purchasing wool carpet?
Is your existing carpet wool?
Beware if you have wool carpet and especially when living in a humid area. Because of the temperature in Queensland and Tweed Head areas the carpet Beetle is very ripe.
They love wool carpet (or any other animal based product silk, leather, wool and fur) and they love quiet dark areas in your home away from light. They can cause irreparable damage and are extremely common in our area. Its important to identify them quickly and take action against further damage. They come in from outside on animals, through windows, on clothes, or on flowers as they feed off pollen.
They come into your home and they will lay eggs which will hatch depending on the temperature of your home to the time this will take. They can lay on average up to 50 eggs and they can live as long as 2 years feeding off your carpet, food, and skin cells on the floor. The longer the pile on the carpet the less lightly you are to find them. As a beetle they have a dark oval appearance which is of course much more visible, once the eggs are laid and they will hatch into long hairy worm like beetles called (carpet beetle larvae) which sheds its hairs all over the area which has been eater.
Its always recommended to vacuum your carpet on a regular basis included under furniture and in corners and undisturbed areas as much as possible.
Most carpet would have a recommended steam clean or cleaning guidelines to go by which any manufactures warranty which should be followed for the up keep on the carpet and durability.
In all cases Carpet Beetle would not be covered under any manufactures warranty.
How to tell if you have carpet Beatles?
If you find areas on your carpet that look like they have disintegrated or the pile seems to have disappeared in small patches, this can just be in certain areas you will probably find the carpet Beetle is in your home.
They don’t like the light so they love living in quiet dark undisturbed areas like under furniture where they are not bothered and they can eat away quietly without being disturbed or noticed. They will slowly eat away at the carpet until just the backing is left.
This only happens with wool carpet or a wool blend carpet.
This only happens with wool carpet and once you find them in your property its best to change the carpet to a different fibre as they will most probably return!!
They will not eat synthetic carpet such as polyproperlyn, nylon, solution dyed nylon or polyester.
